IKEA has always been about accessibility and focused on users. The “build-your-own-furniture” approach has always characterised the company and, as a consequence, designers and engineers have tried to optimise the process and the experience.

Simple designs, pictures and just a few tools are enough to bring a whole house to life.

But, what about a mobile app? Is it enough to bring the IKEA shopping experience into one's hand?

Bring IKEA to life

GOAL

"good design is thorough down to the last detail", Vitsoe

With this personal project, I wanted to reflect on IKEA e-commerce mobile app, focusing on interactions at the micro-level.

APPROACH

I targeted 16 different micro-interactions. For each of them, I designed and prototyped 2, 3 or 4 possible interaction variants, for a total of 51.

Ideation and fast prototyping being the focus of this project, I reasoned on the IKEA brand identity, the in-store shopping experience, customers, needs and motivations behind design choices.

Ideas were many, not all of them good, for sure. However, as chemist Linus Pauling beautifully put:

“The best way to have a good idea is to have a lot of ideas.”

For every variant, I reasoned on design choices, alternatives, pros and cons. Take a look at what was going on inside my head during design and prototyping through the button below.

If you want to play around with the prototype instead, the whole project is available on Figma.

no worries, this button links to no alternate universe, but to a very normal report on G-slides

LOOKING BACK

Lessons learned

Fast prototyping is key: concretising ideas, showing them to the team (and myself!) is extremely effective and saves a lot of time.

Having a lot of ideas, fast, even if bad, makes discussions and decisions easier.

Micro-interactions are extremely important for the whole user experience.
