Following Google’s Reverse Design Sprint approach, in only 5 days we managed to define the requirements and redesign part of the new company app, by involving actual users.

SOLUTION

We wireframed and then prototyped a solution to help workers deal with machines maintenance and malfunctions.

At the end of the Design Sprint, I was the designated speaker for the final public presentation of the project. Through the story of Gino, the machine operator, we managed to give the audience a quick glance at the company and at how our solution really met their needs.

The details of the project are under NDA.

THE PROBLEM

(day 1)

We started our Design Sprint journey by looking at a briefing about the company itself and about what they were asking us to do.

We started our Design Sprint journey by looking at a briefing about the company itself and about what they were asking us to do.

We got the chance to talk to our managers and ask them anything we could think of so as to understand the company dynamics, the workers, their needs and goals.

We spent the entire day diving into that Industrial world, which was almost completely unknown to most of us.

The main issue we had to tackle was:

The main issue we had to tackle was:

Inefficient communication between different employees within the company, especially when a machine or tool they where working on had a malfunction.

understanding the problem was extremely challenging!

So, we had to improve part of their company web and tablet app, in order to support workers in communicating with supervisors and with each other in a straightforward and fast way.

We had total support from the company managers of the project, that also invited us to physically visit the company building.

THE USERS

(day 2)

We interviewed 4 employees with different backgrounds and expertise.

IDEATE

(day 3)

My team and I collected all of our ideas, we mixed them up, and came up with a general wireframe sketch to guide the prototype design.

PROTOTYPE

(day 4)

Last step: build a Figma mock-up prototype to show the managers our solution and ideas. We started from their current app, trying to respect their brand identity and to be consistent with their line of work.

PRESENTATION

We set up 2 presentations:

  • For the company, the managers and the users (online) — a detailed explanation of the results of our research to back up our design choices and the final prototype, which they could test right there during the presentation

  • For the audience (online, in live streaming) — a 4-minutes presentation to give a quick glance of the problem we have to face and of how we addressed it.

For the public presentation, we managed to bring the users inside the company’s world through Storytelling. Our goal was to make the extremely complex company dynamics accessible and easy to grasp.

Lessons learned

Fast thinking and quick iterations in the design process can really make a difference.

Teamwork is fundamental.

Work with different stakeholders, including users, and trying to merge their different needs and requirements.

Effective communication and a good presentation are of the utmost importance. They have to tell a story in order to earn people’s interest and attention.

UX design can have a profound impact on every work environment.

Working with a local manufacturing company, we had the great opportunity to introduce its employees to the world of UX for the first time. At the end of that week, the managers of the project within the company kept thanking us for showing them the importance of User Experience design.
